Snack Time #26 – Double Dutch Ridgies Sour Cream, Green Onion and Bacon Potato Chips

Over the recent Canada Day long weekend, while Mrs. Sip and I were out shopping for party supplies, I came across a snack-sized bag of these Double Dutch potato chips. While waiting at the cash register, I just had to grab the impulse buy.

The Ridgies Sour Cream, Green Onion and Bacon were pretty good and definitely won over Pa Sip. I’m not sure why these chips – despite the absence of a cheese ingredient – weren’t just called Loaded Baked Potato or something along those lines.

Although this snack variation isn’t even listed on the Old Dutch website, it is also available in regular-sized bags. If you want to sample them first, pick up an Appetizer Edition, which the company describes as the “ultimate appie snack”.

I’m a big fan of the Ridgies brand, particularly flavours such as Smoked Meat & Mustard Hoagie (which are sometimes hard to find) and Bacon Cheeseburger Sliders. The line is a little more expensive than other options, but totally worth it.

Snack Time #25 – McDonald’s Sauces

When news first broke that fan-favourite McDonald’s sauces, such as Big Mac, McChicken and Filet-O-Fish would soon be hitting store shelves, the Sip Advisor was one of the masses who rejoiced. Ma Sip recently grabbed the Big Mac and McChicken variations, making it a McHappy Day!

First, we’ll start with the Big Mac Sauce. I’ve only recently got back into Big Mac’s as my burger-of-choice, following years of siding with other options. How did the sauce fare on my homemade burger? Well, not bad at all. Of course, some of the other ingredients from the famous Big Mac jingle were absent, but the sauce itself was tasty and close to the real thing.

Next up, was the McChicken Sauce, which has a smaller opening at the top, compared to the Big Mac bottle. When I first discovered the McChicken, it was a game changer. Being cheese adverse, I hated ordering burgers without the stuff, yet often receiving a cheese-filled meal. I was thrilled to find an item that already came sans fromage. The sauce held up here.

Finally, I can’t say I’ve ever had a Filet-O-Fish (I know, total blasphemy), so I don’t know if I’ll ever get around to trying that product. Perhaps I should take a chance and give the sandwich a shot, but it’s so hard to stray from your favourites. I figure the dressing can best be thought of as tartar sauce enhanced.

I’m not sure if these sauces are available outside Canada. They can be found at most grocery stores for about $4 per bottle, although I’ve noticed some locations only carrying the Big Mac and McChicken varieties, for whatever reason. The sauces were created as part of a partnership with Kraft Heinz and we thank them for their efforts.

Snack Time #24 – Tim Hortons Nanaimo Bar Donut

With Canada’s 150th birthday in the rear-view mirror, I thought we should take a look at one of the treats I was able to have during the festivities last weekend, courtesy of Ma Sip. Tim Hortons has offered this slice of Canadiana for a few months and I was finally able to partake.

The Nanaimo Bar Donut is about as Canadian as it gets, the dessert having been created in the 1950s and named after the city of Nanaimo, British Columbia. While I liked the chocolate and sprinkles of the donut, I was hoping for the crème filling to be more reminiscent of Nanaimo Bars.

Also part of the donut chain’s Canadian lineup is a White & Red Velvet Muffin, Dutchie Donut and Maple Timbits. The collection does a decent job of highlighting some of the flavours and treats that Canada is synonymous with and known for worldwide.

I was slightly perturbed that a Poutine Donut (perhaps even more reflective of Canadian cuisine than a Nanaimo Bar) was only available at some American Tim Hortons locations. I may be in a minority, but I want to try cheese curds, gravy and wedge fries on my pastry, too!

Snack Time #23 – PayDay Texas BBQ

Mrs. Sip and I have long been devotees of PayDay peanut-caramel bars. So, imagine my thrill when I spotted this unique product, while exploring the massive confines of the Dubai Mall in the United Arab Emirates.

The PayDay Texas BBQ variation was interesting. Despite being a fan of barbecue peanuts, I was curious to see how the hickory flavour would mix with the chewy caramel center PayDays are known for. I think the combo worked, but others may find it too odd.

The price of the bars – found in the Hershey World store – came to about $4 Canadian each, so they did not come cheap. I had to grab one though, as even the regular PayDay variation is not available in Canada, let alone any special renderings.

I’ve mentioned before my pursuit for the PayDay Avalanche (chocolate-covered) bar. I also wish I had the opportunity to try the Honey Roasted limited edition release that was available in 2003.

Snack Time #22 – Dutch Crunch Parmesan & Garlic Kettle Chips

When Mrs. Sip and I returned from our recent vacation, Ma Sip was raving about a new chip flavour she had discovered. Upon hearing about the Dutch Crunch variety, I was totally ready for a serving!

The Parmesan & Garlic Kettle Chips are very tasty and addictive. A balance between “rich parmesan and light garlic flavors” was the aim and Dutch Crunch says the chips are perfect for a family picnic or afternoon snack.

Kettle chips rank second right behind ripple chips on the Sip Advisor’s potato chip depth chart. I love a good crunch and kettle chips provide that in spades. That’s why I’ve long been a fan of the Old Dutch Foods brand.

Another Dutch Crunch Kettle Chips flavour that intrigues me is the Bistro Blend. This variety features “a savoury mix of garden grown spices” and are apparently served in Upper Midwest restaurants.

Snack Time #21 – Ritter Sport Cocoa Creme

When Cousin Sip joined Mrs. Sip and I for our weekly dinner, she supplied dessert in the form of a trio of new Ritter Sport releases. I will focus on one of those treats.

The Cocoa Creme variation was my favourite of the bunch. It seems Ritter Sport knows what they have on their hands, asking: “Better than ice cream? Yes: cocoa creme!”

Made with crispy chocolate flakes and creamy filling, Ritter Sport go on to say the Cocoa Creme product “makes everyone twice as happy!” The limited edition bar is only available for a short time.

The other varieties Cousin Sip brought over were the Honig & Crisp (honey with crispy flakes) and Johannisbeer Streusel (red currant yogurt and crumble).

Snack Time #20 – Imperial Nuts Sweet & Savory Bar Mix

Ma Sip found this Imperial Nuts snack mix in recent times and I can’t help but grab a handful or two every time I’m over for a visit. After all, the Sip Advisor is a massive trail mix fan.

The Sweet & Savory Bar Mix is very good… delicious even. Featuring Honey Roasted Peanuts, Pretzels, Smoked Almonds, Toffee Peanuts and Spicy Peanuts, what more could you ask for?

The 1.28kg tub will keep you and your guests well fed for hours. As the canister advertises: “Plenty to share” and “Great for snacking”. I couldn’t have put things better myself.

While the mix is available at a number of different outlets, for Canadians, Ma Sip located the product at the Real Canadian Superstore chain. And I’m so very glad she did!

Snack Time #19 – Anthon Berg Chocolate Liqueurs Gift Box

Mrs. Sip and I were recently gifted this Anthon Berg Chocolate Liqueurs Gift Box. The 64-piece set includes bottles from Sauza Tequila, Jim Beam Bourbon, Cointreau Orange Liqueur, Canadian Club Whiskey, Galliano Vanilla Liqueur, Danzka Vodka, Borghetti Caffe Liqueur, and Remy Martin Cognac.

Despite not being a big dark chocolate fan, I do like these in small doses at one or two at a time. My favourites of the bunch seem to be the liqueur-flavoured options, while there aren’t any I dislike.

The collection is sold in many different formats, so the treats can be sampled at varying price points. I know Walmart (at least in Canada) often sells a set around Christmas that is reasonably priced and I believe contains 16 pieces.

Anthon Berg also has a Chocolate Cocktails line, which I’d be interested in trying. Drinks include the Cosmopolitan, Margarita, Mojito, and Strawberry Daiquiri.

Snack Time #18 – Twizzlers Pull ‘N’ Peel Watermelon

What do you get when you combine two of the Sip Advisor’s favourite things into one nice, neat package? A very happy Sip Advisor! Thankfully, we found this Twizzlers product at the Hershey World store inside the New York New York resort in Las Vegas.

The Twizzlers Pull ‘N’ Peel Watermelon release instantly caught my eye and knowing what a fiend I am for the fruit, Mrs. Sip promptly added them to our growing basket. I’m curious about some of the other flavours we came across in the store, such as Chocolate, Fruit Punch and their Filled Twists line.

Twizzlers Pull ‘N_ Peel Watermelon

Let me be clear, the Sip Advisor is a bigtime Twizzlers fan. No Red Vines for this guy and I just can’t comprehend someone liking the competition. Can anyone try to provide me with an argument for why Red Vines should even share shelf space with the amazing Twizzlers?

I’m not sure how easy it is to find this product elsewhere, but we did spot them at one of the pharmacy stores that line the Las Vegas Strip. We will also be gifting a pack of Key Lime Twizzlers to Ma Sip for Mother’s Day, proving again how great a son I am!

Snack Time #17 – Lays Sweet Southern Heat Barbecue Chips

While Mrs. Sip and I were recently in Las Vegas, the Sip Advisor treated himself to a bag of these Lays Potato Chips. I was in the store for a beer and figured the chips would be a wonderful accompaniment to my beverage.

The name of the chips, Sweet Southern Heat Barbecue, is perfect because there’s equal parts sweet and heat. There’s a little more burn to these crisps than some might want or be ready for, but I thoroughly enjoyed the competing tastes.

Lays may not be my favourite brand of potato chips (I’m a ripple man, after all), but they do rank within my top five, thanks in part to their willingness to experiment. I would place this variation among my favourite all time from the company.

Sadly, I don’t think these chips are available in Canada, which means I’ll have to be on lookout for them next time we hop across the border. While there, I’ll hopefully also be able to grab a bag of their Honey Barbecue, as well.
