Mrs. Sip’s Last Meal

After publishing what would be included in my last meal (if I were so lucky as to get to make such choices), I thought it might be fun to try and prepare a similar feast for Mrs. Sip. My muse had no input prior to when I asked for her involvement, where she will mark my work in each section. Let the fun begin:

Mains (3):

Quesabirria Tacos – Mrs. Sip and I first had quesabirria at a craft brewery in Boston and it blew our minds. It has since become a favourite dish of Mrs. Sip, typically consumed at amusement parks and drinking events.

Lobster… completely deshelled by anyone else! – Mrs. Sip is a lobster connoisseur, so long as she doesn’t have to do the dirty work. Perhaps she can use the meat to compile another preferred meal of hers, a lobster roll.

Eggs Benny with bacon instead of ham – Mrs. Sip is such a fan of brunch, I believe it’s her favourite meal of the day. While she doesn’t typically stray too far from the traditional serving of the dish, she always subs bacon for ham where possible.

It was fairly easy to put together Mrs. Sip’s main courses. While other contenders were considered, such as a plain cheeseburger from McDonald’s, the only fast food Mrs. Sip likes; pepperoni pizza, with stuffed crust and light on the sauce; and an Indian dish like butter chicken or palak paneer, complete with garlic naan; the three items I chose are above and beyond preferences of hers.

Mrs. Sip’s Mark: 4.75 – Very well done! I would only add melted butter and a glass of dry white are lobster meal necessities. Aaannnnd Ma Sip’s cornflake breaded chicken and cheesy hash browns would be a serious contender (you should definitely learn to make it!). I had to deduct 0.25 for not mentioning how the Quesabirria Tacos should be fried in crispy cheese for maximum delciousness!

Sides (4):

Charcuterie Platter with LOTS OF CHEESE!!! – Cheese and crackers… you’re basically describing Mrs. Sip’s teenage diet. Add some other nibblies, such as some cured meats, as well as dark chocolate and nuts to mix things up, and she has everything she needs to pair with one of her preferred beverage choices below.

Seven-Layer Dip with Chips – Mrs. Sip loves her some tortilla chips and her preferred dip to dunk those chips into has seven layers of goodness. I recently made the mistake of picking up what I thought was a seven-layer dip, but was merely a ‘Fiesta Dip’. I paid dearly for those missing couple of layers.

Seafood Chowder – In our many travels around the world, Mrs. Sip has enjoyed a number of chowders. This includes visits to Dublin, San Francisco, Boston, Disneyland, Halifax, etc.

Caprese Salad – Providing the ingredients are fresh, such as they are in Europe, this is Mrs. Sip’s favourite salad.

This was perhaps the most challenging segment of this exercise, with many dishes worthy of consideration. I wanted to use one slot simply for bread, as Mrs. Sip loves that being included prior to meals, however I felt the four appies I chose better reflected a meal worthy of consumption. Other notable sides that were left off, included Chicken McNuggets with sweet and sour sauce, a baked potato with all the fixings, nachos, cornbread, and cheesy bread.

Mrs. Sip’s Mark: 4.0 – This is pretty well done and would likely change on any given day. I think I would sub out charcuterie for a really good garlic cheese bread, but this is dependent on just how much good wine is on hand. Also, is there truffle burrata and red wine cheddar on the board? Hmmm, hard choice!  Burrata for the caprese and a breadbowl for the chowder, and those sides sound just about right! However, I would take the appie-sized butternut squash ravioli from Cactus Club as my number one side!

Snacks (2):

Popcorn – A childhood favourite treat for Mrs. Sip (which she passed onto the Siplings) has remained a preferred snack during movies, sporting events and amusement park visits.

Beef Jerky/Pepperoni Sticks – Another ingredient of her younger years, Mrs. Sip will often pick up one of these products from the impulse buy area of store checkouts.

Another easy section to compile for the lady of the house!

Mrs. Sip’s Mark: 4.75 – Don’t forget the popcorn needs to be drowning in real butter!!!

Desserts (3):

Ice Cream Cake – Mrs. Sip loves ice cream cake, with Dairy Queen novelties regularly being served for her birthdays and other milestones. Another version she enjoys is the Billy Miner Pie offered by The Keg restaurant chain. She even likes this indulgent dessert, despite its coffee flavour.

Crème Brûlée – I have watched Mrs. Sip eat many servings of crème brûlée, as it is not among my own likes. Perhaps that’s why she orders it, eliminating the need to share. Either way, Mrs. Sip especially enjoys the burnt top of this meal finisher.

Cookie Dough – Sometimes, the cookies don’t even get baked, as Mrs. Sip (not unlike other females) has been known to consume the dough straight from whatever device it has been cased in. Warning labels be damned, sometimes stuff is better raw.

This was another difficult section to fill out, as Mrs. Sip likes a number of sweet treats. I almost included a Nanaimo Bar to completely troll my love, who as a youngster once feasted on too many at a family party and ended up getting sick. She hasn’t touched one since. Notable omissions, included scones with clotted cream and jam, as well as chocolate fondue.

Mrs. Sip’s Mark: 4.95 – I think this is pretty accurate. I may replace Creme Brûlée with salted chocolate caramels from Purdy’s, but I’m really not sure myself when it comes down to it.

Beverages (2):

White Wine – Regardless of grape (chardonnay, pinot grigio/gris or even bubbly), Mrs. Sip loves her wine, preferably sipped in a beautiful vineyard.

London Fog Chai Tea Latte – This is practically a daily treat for Mrs. Sip. I’ve picked up so many for her or driven her to get one over our many years together that I have second-hand London Fog issues.

Another fairly easy category to curate for Mrs. Sip. Narrowly missing the cut here were drinks such as Horchata and a Mai Tai cocktail.

Mrs. Sip’s Mark: 2.75 – 0.25 deducted for calling a London Fog a CHAI tea latte. Tsk, tsk. Chai lattes are good, London Fogs are better. I would also just accept a cup of Double Cream of Earl Grey (with a splash of milk). HOWEVER -2.0 for “regardless of grape!?” Sir, you did NOT!!! Now I’m not deducting full points as I assume the slip was omitting the word “dry”. Then you would be correct, as I like any good dry white wine varietal. But if someone had brought me a Moscato or Gertz for my last meal, I would probably have just cried into my cup. Make those corrections and this was 5/5.

Rusty Rail

  • 1 oz Scotch
  • 1 oz Fernie Fog Liqueur
  • Garnish with Dark Chocolate

For this article’s beverage, I wanted to incorporate the Fernie Fog Liqueur Mrs. Sip bought me, as the flavours replicate an Earl Grey Tea taste. I also made sure to use the bottle of Scoth Mrs. Sip one at a whiskey tasting a few years back. Top it off with a chunk of dark chocolate, a callback to the charcuterie board mentioned above and you have a cocktail made for a queen!

Mixer Mania #41 – Food Heroes

Both Blueberries and Pomegranates are considered superfoods, so combining the two into one juice seems like a super-duper food. Here’s a look at some of the most popular superfoods and where they rank with the Sip Advisor:

Spinach: The original superfood and performance enhancing drug of Popeye. I love Ma Sip’s patented spinach dip, but I think the ingredients that turn it into a dip likely take away some of its superfood shine.

Kale: I hate Kale. Hate, hate, hate it. There is nothing worse than reading a restaurant’s menu and seeing a Caesar Salad that sounds scrumptious, only to realize it’s kale and not lettuce-based.

Kale - Ale.jpg

Beans: Bean, beans the musical fruit… you know the rest. I like beans on a massive burrito, thus negating all the positive effects they are supposed to provide eaters with.

Sweet Potatoes: I’m not much of a yam fries guy, but this is the only way I’d choose to consume sweet potatoes.

Salmon: As a wee little sipper, the Sip Advisor wasn’t much of a salmon fan, which is practically criminal when you live in the Pacific Northwest. Over time, I’ve come to enjoy some salmon dishes, such as the cedar plank barbecued variety.

Wheatgrass: I wonder if wheatgrass can be used in hefeweizen beers?

Green Tea: Skip. I mean, it’s not even a food.

Dark Chocolate: Only milk chocolate for this hombre.

Broccoli: I like broccoli. I know that might shock some of you who have read the rest of this list. Here’s the catch, though: that little green tree had better be smothered in ranch dressing or fried in tempura if you going to put it on my plate.

Cauliflower: See broccoli… but to a lesser extent.

Cauliflower Trash

Garlic: I guess garlic fries kind of defeats the purpose of it being a superfood!

Beets: Interestingly, Pa Sip – a selective eater – loves beets. Unfortunately, that preference was not hereditary.

Avocados: Best known as the primary ingredient in guacamole, which I find to be hit and miss, depending on the creator. I find it safest to just avoid the green guck.

Greek Yogurt: While I like Greek food – souvlaki, calimari, etc. – their yogurt, and all yogurts in fact, are an enemy of the Sip Advisor state.

Quinoa: The thought of quinoa is enough to make the Sip Advisor cry.

Strawberries: Alright, this I can get behind. I love strawberries, especially the dipped in milk chocolate type. A very sensual superfood.

Watermelon: As much as I love strawberries, I worship watermelon. Watermelon isn’t nearly as sensual, however.

Oatmeal: Do cookies count!?

Oatmeal Win

Pistachios: While a fan of many nuts (that doesn’t sound right!), I have never really got behind pistachios. I do hear it’s a popular ice cream flavour, though.

Eggs: Mrs. Sip is big on egg dishes, but the Sip Advisor only partakes on occasion. Give me the other main elements of a balanced breakfast instead.

Almonds: My affinity for trail mix has been well-documented and a main ingredient of any good trail mix is the almond. You can also double up with the chocolate-covered variety, if you so choose.

Ginger: Does it count if it’s in liquid form and mixed with rum or whiskey?

Pumpkin: I appreciate their use as Halloween decorations, but don’t want anything to do with pumpkin seeds, pumpkin pie, or anything pumpkin-spiced.

Apples: I’m cool with apples… so long as they’re of the Granny Smith family… and perhaps smothered in caramel and other goodies.

Cranberries: I have a respect for cranberry juice and all the amazing cocktail that it provides. Speaking of cocktails, let’s get to today’s drink!

Mixer Mania #41: Shanah Tovah! (Happy New Year!)

Shanah Tovah.JPG

  • 1.5 oz Vodka
  • Top with Blueberry-Pomegranate Juice
  • Splash of Lemon Juice
  • Garnish with Blueberries

Why can’t things like bacon and potato chips be considered superfoods? All we need is for one nutritionist to lose their mind and declare them as such. Kind of makes a guy want to go back to school, earn yet another degree and make this dream happen!

Sip Advisor Bar Notes (3.5 Sips out of 5):
This drink was good, but tasted too much like juice. The alcohol was virtually hidden, so should be consumed with caution. Then again, if you have no interest in alcohol flavours, this might be the beverage for you.

Snack Time #6: President’s Choice Chocolate Covered Caramel Popcorn with Sea Salt

As a Christmas stocking stuffer for Mrs. Sip, I picked up a pack of the President’s Choice Chocolate Covered Caramel Popcorn with Sea Salt. Did she/we enjoy it? Let’s just say the box didn’t last very long once we opened it up.

I prefer the milk chocolate clusters to the dark chocolate ones, but even the dark chocolate isn’t bad here and if you mix the two, you barely even notice the more bitter version. Some pieces are lighter than others on salt content, but that’s all good with me.

In fact, the treat was so good, I picked up another box for Mrs. Sip’s birthday and really wish I’d grabbed more, especially when they were on sale following the holidays. Even at regular price, I think this dessert is totally worth it and I’m an anti-popcorn advocate.

I’ve become a big fan of many President’s Choice products, from their cookies to their potato chips to their trail mixes and nuts. You will likely see more President’s Choice selections appear in Snack Time articles in the future.

July 20 – Melon Ball

Creative Cuisine

There are some odd culinary pairings in existence where anyone who has tried the combo swears by its deliciousness. Some of these I’ve tried and others I’ve merely only heard about. While I’ll give most anything a fair shot, I must admit that some of these couplings will take more convincing than others. This seems to be a growing field in the gastronomic world, as there’s even an entire site dedicated to the cause. Here are some blends that I’ve tried myself or found around the wild, wild web:

Melon and Prosciutto

For two completely contrasting food items, melon and prosciutto work really well together. Even though I’m not a big melon fan, the mix of sweetness from the melon and salty from the prosciutto produce a melt in your mouth snack that will blow your mind. Of course, prosciutto seems to accentuate a number of other items from crackers to salads and everything in between.

prosciutto-and-melon

Chili Powder and Vanilla Ice Cream

I’ve enjoyed chocolate with chili powder, so I don’t see it as too much of a stretch that vanilla ice cream would also work when paired with chili powder. Heck, some chili powder might be the perfect thing to spice (literally!) up your plain old vanilla ice cream. And if you begin to feel the burn, it shouldn’t be too long before the cool ice cream dulls that tongue-on-fire sensation.

Watermelon and Black Pepper

I’ve professed my love for watermelon through this site on a couple occasions already. That love will never fade and I must admit that combing the melon with black pepper intrigues me. Watermelon can be a very subtle taste, so perhaps the addition of black pepper is simply to bring the devourer back to flavour country aboard the pepper express!

Dark Chocolate and Parmesan Cheese

One suggestion was to enjoy this union as a grilled cheese sandwich and I’m still trying to get my head around that idea. Parmesan is one of the few cheeses I seem to not mind, but mixing it with anything other than a Caesar salad seems like crazy talk to me. I even ran this by cheese guru Mrs. Sip and she couldn’t exactly picture the meal being palatable.

Grilled-Cheese-Dark-Chocolate

Jalapeno and Strawberries

Most times, these odd pairings feature the coming together of two wildly different flavours. In this case, you have the sweet strawberries being mixed with spicy jalapenos. Each bite would be a mix of competing emotions, with the spice surely winning the battle. I only like jalapenos in small doses on nachos and such, so I don’t think this combo would go over very well for me.

Chocolate and Fried Onions

This concept has me quite intrigued. I think I would enjoy a plate of onion rings with a chocolate drizzle laid over them or a little dish of the sweet stuff on the side to dip the rings in. Hell, deep fry anything and dunk it in chocolate and you’ll probably come up with a decent, gluttonous snack. I’ll put money on the fact this concept was first dreamt up in the American south and for that, we thank you!

McDonalds Fries and Hot Fudge Sundae

This combination was brought to our attention by an Australian. The Aussies are known for doing crazy things, but this being on the tamer side, Mrs. Sip and I gave it a shot are were surprised at how well the two products came together. The salt sticks known as McDonalds fries pair very well with the sweetness of hot fudge and the creamy vanilla soft-serve ice cream.

sundae&fries

French Fries and Ranch Dressing

I should be a spokesperson for ranch dressing. I mean, just like the Frank’s Red Hot commercials, I put that sh*t on everything… tacos, sandwiches, pizza, chicken, pasta, and especially French fries. A new combo I’ve been working on of late is to mix ranch dressing with honey garlic sauce before dousing the above items with this hybrid of sweet and tangy that will blow your mind. Patent pending!

Ketchup and Macaroni & Cheese

This is another one that I’ve been doing for years, since I was a little sipper, and don’t find it an odd pairing at all, but it came up a few times in the course of my research for this article. I prefer my mac n’ cheese to be leftovers, where the cheese has dried, rather than fresh with gooey, slimy cheese. Then, just splat some catsup over the bowl, mix it up and you have a perfect quick meal.

Peanut Butter and Bacon

I love peanut butter and I love bacon, so it seems mixing the two together might be a no-brainer. I’ve enjoyed both in chocolate, so perhaps we’d be looking at our first triple threat food pairing if we combined all three together. A PB&B sandwich actually sounds pretty tempting… delicious even. I’m pretty sure I’m going to make one to enjoy with today’s shot du jour.

Drink #201: Melon Ball

July 20

  • 0.5 oz Vodka
  • 0.5 oz Melon Liqueur
  • 0.5 oz Pineapple Juice
  • Garnish with Watermelon Ball

What is your favourite odd food pairing? Give me your best recipes and perhaps I’ll do another post on reader suggestions and how well I was able to stomach them. Sounds like fun for all, doesn’t it!?

Sip Advisor Bar Notes (4 Sips out of 5):
The Watermelon Ball was a nice touch and the shooter was delicious. I was curious about Pineapple Juice being part of the recipe, but it worked well with the Melon Liqueur and you can’t ever knock Vodka for fear of a Vodka Belt reprisal!
