BC Beer Baron #303 – R&B Enigma Kettle Sour

One of the highlights of the BC Beer Awards was the broad spectrum of brewing styles that were on display. That included this tart offering from R&B Brewing.

The Enigma Kettle Sour is a dry-hopped sour ale, featuring the eponymous Enigma hops, in combination with Galaxy hops. The 6.5% ABV, 18 IBUs beverage is stronger than many sours on the market, which certainly catches the Sip Advisor’s eye.

The latest release from R&B’s Mount Pleasant Series is available in bomber-sized bottles at private liquor stores. It can also be found on tap at R&B’s awesome new tasting room in the Brewery Creek area of Vancouver.

Also part of the Mount Pleasant Series are the Vienna Lager and White IPA. The series focuses on limited edition brews, offering “new and interesting flavours” for drinkers.

BC Beer Baron #235 – R&B Kettle Sour Export Stout

While on a recent craft beer crawl in the Brewery Creek neighbourhood, we stopped into R&B Brewing’s new Ale and Pizza House – a debut visit for the Sip Advisor. There, along with some fantastic pizzas, I ordered a flights of beers, which included this very unique selection.

The Kettle Sour Export Stout is something I have never seen on a brewery’s menu before. I liked the mix of roasted stout flavour combined with a tart finish. At 7% ABV and 50 IBUs, the beer is definitely strong and complex. With each sip, you’ll notice different elements and those components even evolve as the drink changes temperature.

R&B Kettle Sour Export Stout

Originally released at the beginning of 2016, the Kettle Sour Stout is part of the brewery’s Mount Pleasant Series. Suggested food pairings include desserts, such as Black Forest Cake and sea-salted or bitter chocolates. When launched, the beer was available in bomber-sized bottles, but I didn’t see any at R&B during this stopover.

The Sip Advisor was thrilled to see the Ale and Pizza House finally open. In February, Mrs. Sip and I were allowed to peek inside, as they were doing “final touches”. Then, the planned soft opening on St. Patrick’s Day came and went and the delays kept coming, due to BC Liquor Board holdups. Congrats to R&B!

BC Beer Baron #68 – R&B Hidcote Purple Lavender Saison

The second stop on our Brewery Creek crawl took us to R&B Brewing, where we were able to sample a handful of beers at their growler fill station.

Mrs. Sip was a big fan of their Hidcote Purple Lavender Saison, which is very subtle in the lavender department. She liked it so much that she grabbed a bomber bottle for the road… which the Sip Advisor then had to carry around all day! Coming in at 5.7% ABV, the beer is a little boozier than most saisons I’ve encountered and I think that works for Mrs. Sip, who prefers Belgian tripels of all things.

R&B Lavender Saison

The saison is part of the brewery’s Mount Pleasant Series and is a limited release. This fifth entry into that series only hit taps earlier this month and the servers we spoke to over the weekend, didn’t expect the beer to last long. If saisons or experimental beers are your thing, I’d act fast on this intriguing product.

We may have visited R&B just a little too early, as they anticipate their tasting room to officially open in the next week or so. We were able to duck our heads quickly into the almost ready facility and it looks like it will be a highlight of future stops in the neighbourhood. All the best to the team that has worked so hard to get this up and running.
