Snack Time #16 – M&M’s Strawberry Nut

M&Ms are very good at routinely releasing different limited edition flavours and for the most part they pass the taste test. Mrs. Sip spotted this variation while we were recently in Las Vegas and I’m so glad she did.

The Strawberry Nut variety is delicious. The key is that the strawberry flavour is kept light and then you have the usual peanut and chocolate enjoyment that is typical from M&M’s Peanut products. The strawberry adds a touch of decadence.

Coming in red, pink and green candy-coated shells, it’s taken great willpower for me to ration the little treats. I don’t know whether they’re available outside the US and how long they will remain on store shelves before disappearing.

This isn’t M&M’s first foray into strawberry fields (forever), as the company has also released Strawberry Shortcake, Strawberried Peanut Butter and plain ol’ Strawberry recipes. Keep em’ coming, guys!

Snack Time #15 – Snackgold Iberian Ham Chips

Always willing to try odd potato chips flavours (despite my experience in the UK with Walker’s Lamb & Mint crisps!), Ma Sip recently picked up a bag of this very uniquely-flavoured product, which I just had to indulge in.

The Snackgold Iberian Ham Chips were very tasty, with a solid crunch. I was amazed that these chips actually tasted like ham and you could tell they weren’t bacon flavoured. The experience left me wondering why it took so long for a company to go the ham route.

For those unfamiliar with Iberia and its association with ham, you can look to countries such as Spain and Portugal, which comprise the majority of the Iberian Peninsula. Add in Andorra, Gibraltar and a small parcel of France for Europe’s second largest peninsula.

Snackgold also offers a Black Truffle flavour of gourmet chips. I’ve seen both varieties at Winners stores, although the line is also available online and can likely be tracked down at various import shops, if you’re lucky.

Snack Time #14 – Hershey’s Cookie+ Bars

When Ma Sip first told me she had picked up these Hershey’s Chocolate new releases, I got a little excited. Unfortunately, while still pretty good, they didn’t live up to my hopeful expectations.

Part of this is because I’ve never been enthralled with Hershey’s chocolate. Also, I was hoping the bars would be more similar to the Cookies & line released by Mars Inc. when the Sip Advisor was a teenager.

The bars come in Vanilla Crème and Caramel varieties. Each pouch contains seven snack-sized bars, which was a little disappointing given the price Ma Sip paid, but not surprising given the ways of the world.

For whatever reason, I can only find information on the company’s similar Cookie Layer Crunch Bars, which also offers a Mint-flavoured option. Not sure where the Cookie+ bars have been lost to?

Snack Time #13 – Ruffles Mozzarella ‘N Marinara Chips

The Sip Advisor is a big fan of Ruffles Potato Chips. When a new release from the company comes along, you better believe I’ll be front and center, trying to get my grubby little paws on a bag of the snack food.

The Mozzarella ‘N Marinara Chips are an intriguing product. Looking to replicate a classic Mozzarella Stick, I think they get the job done, with flavours of cheese, tomato sauce, garlic and spices featured in the recipe.

There was a time when the Sip Advisor refused to each cheese. That has changed, with mozzarella being one of my preferred options now. Given I’ll eat anything that’s deep fried, Mozzarella Sticks have gained my approval.

It’s hard for me to narrow down my favourite Ruffles flavour, but I’d probably give an edge to their Sour Cream ‘N Onion variety. Another contender is Sour Cream ‘N Bacon, which is funny given I don’t like sour cream.

Snack Time #12 – Archer Farms Monster Trail Mix

The Sip Advisor is a bigtime fan of trail mixes. Mrs. Sip, cognizant of this fact, recently picked up a pack of Archer Farms Monster Trail Mix for me when she was recently in the States on a girls’ trip.

I’m particularly fond of the mixes that combine peanuts, cashews, almonds, raisins, and candy-coated chocolate, such as the Monster version. The added bonus of this product is the peanut butter chips it also includes. I really enjoy this mix, but find it to be lacking in nut content. To remedy the situation, I often combine the Monster assortment with other peanuts I have on hand, to better balance the blend.

Sold at Target stores, other Archer Farms variations include Simply Trail; Caramel Cashew; Black & White; Tex Mex; Peanut Butter Monster; Peanuts, Pretzels & Sesame Sticks; Sunny Cranberry; Handful of Everything; Zen Party; Sweet Cajun; and Bunny Bait; among others. They company also dabbles in the plain nut game, with packages including Raw Mixed Nuts; Roasted Jumbo Cashews; and Raw Almonds.

Each Archer Farms mix comes in a variety of formats, from 14 oz re-sealable packs to 36 oz containers. You can even get a bag containing 10 snack-size servings and trail mix bars, for those on the go.

Snack Time #11: Reese’s Nutrageous Bar/Reese’s Pieces Peanut Butter Cups

This week, we get a double shot of products from the amazing Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups line. Anyone who isn’t a Reese’s fan either has a nut allergy (a reasonable excuse) or has some serious mental issues. There, I said it!

The Nutrageous Bar reminds me of a Peanut Butter Oh Henry, which is a very tasty treat in its own right. I really enjoyed the Nutrageous, which Ma Sip found in snack size, while in the US and I’m not sure if they’ve crossed the border into Canada yet… my guess would be not likely.

As for the Reese’s Pieces Peanut Butter Cups, as soon as I saw these treats being advertised, I had to get my hands on them. We ended up having the King Cups variation, which I thought were a little overpriced at $2.19 for a pack, but the Reese’s Pieces add a nice crunch to the experience.

In conclusion, I commend the Reese’s research and development team and implore them to keep the new releases coming. Did you know H.B. Reese (the Reese behind the company) invented the treat in 1928, while fathering 16 children!

Snack Time #10: Fairfields Farm Crisps Smoky Bacon & Sunday Roast Potato Chips

The Sip Advisor is always on the lookout for new potato chip flavours. Typically, this occurs through the usual suspects (Lays, Pringles, Ruffles, etc.), so it’s always a bit refreshing when a completely unknown company provides the snack.

The Fairfields Farm Crisps Smoky Bacon & Sunday Roast Potato Chips were delicious, with the taste of bacon being most prominent, but not overwhelming. The price of $2.99 for a medium-sized bag may seem steep, but it’s worth it for the flavour and crunch.

Fairfileds Farm Crisps, a British company, has an extensive lineup of snack goods. Some I would love to try include their Chorizo & Tomato, Turkey with Sage & Onion, and Parsnip with Honey & Black Pepper Crisps, as well as Jalapeno & Lime Tortilla Chips.

Ma Sip picked up this product to share with me (a certified chippy monster) at her local HomeSense store. HomeSense has some other intriguing flavours at their impulse buy checkout area and those will certainly be reviewed soon.

Snack Time #9: Mrs. Fields Milk Chocolate Chip Cookies

To the Sip Advisor, there’s nothing like capping a meal with a cookie. Thanks to the Mrs. Fields company and their eight-pack box of treats, that is easily achieved without having to do much for a fresh-out-of-the-oven experience.

My flavour preference comes in the form of the Milk Chocolate Chip variety. Other releases in the lineup include White Chunk Macadamia, Oatmeal Raisin, and Dark Chocolate Chip, of which I have tried the latter two options.

What I really like about these cookies is that they are individually wrapped, making them perfect for packing for work lunches. It also stops you from eating a ton of them and makes it easier to move on after one serving.

Although the price on these boxes is $4.49 at Shoppers Drug Mart locations, I can often find the product on sale. Most recently, the cookies were available for only $1.99, which make them an astonishing 25-cents per cookie.

Snack Time #8: Jelly Belly 10 Flavour Pack

After mentioning that I was craving jelly beans the other day, as a belated Valentine’s Day treat, Mrs. Sip picked up a box of the Jelly Belly 10 Flavour Pack for moi. The case was holiday-themed for the occasion, but also comes in a year-round format.

Flavours included blueberry, buttered popcorn, cinnamon, coconut, licorice, Sunkist tangerine mandarin, green apple, juicy pear, watermelon, and very cherry. That’s an impressively broad profile of tastes in one little pack.

The only one I didn’t like was the juicy pear, although I’ve never understood Jelly Belly always hyping their buttered popcorn bean. I would have rather seen strawberry or a lemon/lime flavour instead, among the company’s eclectic options.

I liked that the pack is spilt into 10 labeled pods as I always found assorted Jelly Belly packs frustrating with not knowing whether I was putting watermelon or jalapeño in my mouth. I think Jelly Belly sadistically thrives on that risk.

Snack Time #7: Pringles Kickin’ Chicken Taco

While in Las Vegas this past week, I knew I’d find some kind of treat to profile. After all, Sin City is a place of great indulgence and my quest was quickly accomplished in the form of this Pringles potato chips release.

The Kickin’ Chicken Taco flavour definitely has a taco seasoning/salsa kick to the chip, with the chicken taste finishing the experience. I liked that there was a little heat coming along with the snack, but nothing extreme.

Part of the Food Truck Flavors series, apparently the only other product in the collection is Cheese Burger, which apparently tastes like a McDonald’s burger. I’d love to see something like Korean BBQ added in the future.

While Pringles, admittedly, aren’t my favourite potato chip brand, I do appreciate their line’s willingness to experiment with different flavours, even having dessert options. And yes, once I pop, I just can’t stop!
